The Silencer Mystique

Sig Sauer with Advanced Armament Prodigy

A rifle or pistol silencer makes perfect sense as noise pollution levels rise and attendance at shooting ranges across America steadily increases. Range noise can be unnerving! Silencers have received almost mystical status over the years. Displayed inaccurately among the film and television landscape as devices that whisper while committing the act of lethal force.

That is certainly a misrepresentation. The correct term for the decibel reducing device is a sound suppressor or better yet a sound modifier. Attached to a .22 caliber pistol, a suppressor using subsonic ammunition, produces a sound very similar to large pneumatic nailers, the big ones, and a bit louder with a rifle because the length of the rifle's barrel allows the projectile to reach maximum velocity.

There is a phenomenon refereed to as First Round Pop. This is a louder than usual report occurring when oxygen is present within a suppressor. FRP usually occurs as you take the first shot. It is noticeably louder than the subsequent shots and will reoccur again once the oxygen reenters the suppressor.

There are several silencer manufactures to chose from. But that is not the topic of this article. Be wary of inexpensive suppressors as you should be with any firearm component.

If the idea of a quiet .22 LR rimfire shooting range on that acreage you just purchased, mindful of the legal setbacks from all other private and public byways, or the idea of owning something cool, this is the accessory for you! The following is the best route to take toward ownership.

1. Get a copy of the software program Kiplinger's WillPower 2004 Win/Mac and create a revocable living trust. You will be the “Grantor” and “Trustee”. Keep things simple!

2. Print out 5 copies and have them notarized. Your bank should do this for free. There will not be a schedule of any items with this printout.

3. Decide on the suppressor you want to purchase. Silencertests.com is a very good resource for information. Most class 3 dealers, FFL SOT, should be able to help or order the suppressor for you.

4. Take a copy of your trust to the “FFL SOT” and a check made payable to the BATFE for $200.00. The dealer will then fill out the appropriate forms, sign them and have you fill out the necessary information.

5. Staple your check to the forms and include a notarized copy of your trust.

6. Put all of that in the mail and sit back and wait!

The process, If you are a good guy, usually takes 30 to 45 days. The BATFE will cash your check and the FBI will do a background check on you.

Once your dealer receives the Tax Stamp you purchased he should call you. You will then have to fill out a standard FFL form just like the one you fill out when you purchase any firearm . The dealer will do a background check and you will be given your suppressor.

There are legal obligations that go along with any firearm but that is not the topic of this article. Suppressors are legal for individual ownership in 35 of the 50 states. If you live in one of the states that does not allow ownership.... move.
