For home defense a combination projected laser and illumination device would be an excellent consideration. These units are lightweight, easily activated and have very small profiles. They provide plenty of illumination and the projected red dot is a good deterrent. Great for pistols too!

Range time requirements for your Ar-15 are different, combining a vertical grip with a bi-pod. The Grip Pod is a very well built combination of the two devices.
